Your house is an asset that holds a monetary as well as sentimental value to you. Therefore, you must avoid any sort of damage to this valuable asset. Since the basement is the foundation of your home, the water damage should be repaired immediately in order to prevent any further damage and also to preserve the value of your asset. Water seeping into the basement of a house is a common problem in homes and as prevention is always better than cure, so basement waterproofing is a must. Other than eliminating the chance of ruining the items stored in your basement, waterproofing is necessary because of the following reasons.

An additional living space is created

On getting your basement waterproofed, you can create an additional living space. You can convert your basement into a place for family gathering and socializing or to a guest room or to your kid’s playroom, without fearing for any water drippings or leakage.

Maintain the structural integrity of the room

Whenever the water starts seeping into a building’s foundation, the structure starts to deteriorate. This can cause a serious damage to the foundation or the basement. Waterproofing your basement can not only maintain the structural integrity but also improve it. With such a service you will be able to save a huge amount that will be spent on repairs in the future.

The value of your property will be maintained

This is another great advantage of waterproofing your basement. On hiring professional services for waterproofing, you will maintain as well as increase the value of your home a well. Whenever you decide to sell it, you will definitely get more than what you actually paid for. This particular feature of a waterproof basement can help you to earn profit while selling it.

Health benefits related to waterproofing

Your basement will be an obvious home for mold and mildew, if there is dark and have any signs of water due to damages. This is because dampness and moisture are an excellent medium for their breeding. Many homeowners accept this problem as a part of their life. However, any of these organisms like mold, fungus, mildew are dangerous for an individual’s health. When you breathe in these organisms especially mold with the air, it directly affects your lungs and respiratory system and you may suffer with sinus, asthmatic problems and even cancer. Waterproofing the basement can ensure your protection from all such health related issues.

More and more people nowadays are concerned about Mother Earth and are embracing the ‘green’ in every possible way. Even the building industry is considering the earth conscious demands of consumers and are constructing eco-friendly dwellings. If you dream to live in one of such dwellings, then a log home can make this dream of yours come true. Not only the log cabins hold an environmentally friendly nature, but also are aesthetically gorgeous. Here we have discussed certain reasons why living in these homes helps you in minimizing your carbon footprints.

Milled logs reduce waste

Logs, that are used to create log homes, undergo the log milling process. The by-products of the logs formed during the process including shavings, carvings, sawdust and other scrap can be re-purposed or reused for building small wooden household objects like furniture, accessories or fences. Hence a little is wasted in the process.

Recyclable logs
While constructing a log cabin, reclaimed logs that are salvaged from antique barns and building are put into use. This all points out that no new tree is cut for building a log cabin home. Moreover, the materials used for making these log cabins are further recyclable when compared to traditional building materials.

Natural Insulation
Log cabins have walls made of logs that offers structural support and natural insulation. Unlike the walls of a standard home, the log walls do not heat up very quickly. They absorb heat and maintain heat for long and then slowly dispenses heat reducing the heating costs in winters. In summers these log walls do not absorb heat to the same degree thus minimizing air conditioning expenses.

Energy Efficient Heating and Cooling
When compared to traditional homes, the log cabin homes are much more energy efficient from its production to completion. These homes employ logs of wood as the principal material in their making, which travel a shorter distance than the materials used for constructing traditional homes and thus conserving the fuel during transportation. As mentioned above, these homes also save the energy that is consumed for heating and cooling purposes.

No Toxic Chemicals
Another environmental fact about these types of green homes is that they do not employ any toxic chemicals during their manufacture. The log homes make use of water based (latex) stains with no or a significantly lesser amount of VOC . Therefore these homes are beneficial to the health of both the owner of the house and the environment.

Humidity is the moisture content present in the air. The temperature of the air also affects the humidity level of air such that the warmer the air is, the more water it can hold. During summers we want a combination of dry air and low humidity to result in a cooler ambient temperature and during the winters we prefer high levels of humidity to combat the cold air and make the environment a little warm. The inaccurate levels of humidity or moisture in the air can lead to various health related problems.

Although, nothing can be done to improve the external weather conditions, we can bring the right levels of humidity in our homes by making use of a valuable tool like a humidifier. A humidifier is therefore necessary to be installed in homes to fight problems discussed after the jump.

Colds and Flu

Many of us catch cold and flu during the winter months. The reason behind this is the cold and dry air of this season, which makes it pretty easy for the influenza virus to survive and thrive and also to pass from person to person. When a humidifier is installed inside the house, it keeps the air moist and hence inhibits the spread of the virus. This way the flu is prevented from being transmitted.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis generally tend to develop after some infection with a cold. The symptoms of bronchitis include coughing, sore throat, wheezing and fever. Although bronchitis is resolved on its own within a week or 10 days, but if you have a humidifier integrated in your home, then the discomfort associated with this disease is relieved because of the moisture in the air due to the humidifier. Some medical practitioners also suggest to add either tee tree or eucalyptus oil to the humidifier as it helps in thinning of the mucus in the chest to be expelled out.

Dry Skin

For all people who have an extremely dry skin, a humidifier is again beneficial to ease out the itching, burning and discomfort caused due to this skin type. On integrating a humidifier, you easily adjust the humidity levels of your home during summers or winters or any other sort of climate.

Home Damage

Besides the health benefits of a humidifier, it is also advantageous in protecting your home furnishings. Lower humidity levels cause cracks in your furniture or peeling wallpaper or paint. With a humidifier you can regulate the humidity level in your home thus rectifying these problems.

We normally start our day from the bathroom and end it up in the bathroom with a shower to shed the hectic day at work before going to the bed. If your bathroom is one of the most important parts of your living area, then why should it remain an isolated space within the home, especially when you spend thousands on your home or living room decor? Revitalizing your bathing space, designer Alexander Zhukovsky has come up with a bathroom concept called the “BATHSPHERE” that brings the bathroom to your living room.

Featuring the body finished in glass, the spherical bathroom moves you to a serene world where you can relax and prepare yourself for the day ahead. Allowing the user to replicate rain in the form of shower and control the temperature, the BATHSPHERE also lets you control humidity, light, sounds and aroma within the sphere. Levitating from the ceiling of the living room, the spherical bathroom lets you experience the weightlessness while setting the mood.

Log cabin home is an architectural style that was initially developed and used by the colonial settlers 375 years ago. It was simply constructed by stripping off a tree bark and notching the logs together with strategic cuts and mortar. By making use of available natural resources, any skilled pioneer could assemble their very own log home. As these homes were simple in design and style they were considered to be rustic backwoods dwelling. But today, they have gained popularity because of the several advantages of living in such dwellings. Out of the many benefits of a log cabin home, few are discussed here.

Energy-Efficiency

Energy efficiency is the foremost advantage of log homes. Since logs are natural insulators, they can maintain the internal temperatures in a much better way than in a similar traditional wood frame home. The HVAC, thermostats, furnaces etc. or in simple words the heating and cooling systems in a log home work efficiently well. Hence, you can save up-to 15 percent on your energy bills. To get the maximum thermal efficiency you need to imply logs that are six to eight inches thick.

Environmental benefits

Since people today has become environmentally conscious and are looking for ways to go green, log cabin homes can be a good option for them to live a greener lifestyle. Eco-friendly materials are used to construct these homes. Various log homes utilize the wood of dead trees that can no longer be used anywhere else. The processes required for the construction make use of a lesser energy than required to construct a standard house, thereby reducing the carbon footprint.

Healthy Living

People suffering with health issues related to environment like allergies or sensitivities find it advantageous to live in log cabins. The humidity level in such homes is quite less and therefore the inner air quality is much healthier and comfortable. Consecutively, the chances of developing any kind of allergies or mildew problems are lowered.

Soundproof Living

The logs used to construct the log cabins also insulates sound. The sheer mass of the logs and the crevice shape of the walls, makes these homes noise free. For people who appreciate privacy from the neighborhood and love to live a quiet and peaceful life, a log cabin home is a good solution for them.

Gorgeous Designs

Modern day log cabin homes offer beautiful designs that a person requires in a contemporary living. It is a kind of artwork that employs exquisite craftsmanship and so each of the log homes constructed is one of its kind with a unique style and character.

Besides being a decorative object in a room and giving it a glamorous touch, mirror decoration is not yet a flourished field in the context of home décor. However, many people use it as a finish material on walls or even as furniture cladding. They are available in varying shapes and sizes on the shelves. Mirrors have the ability to transform the appearance of a small room into a spacious room in no time as they have the efficiency of reflecting light and make the room bright. You can hang them over fireplaces, or place them in frames and give a chic appeal to any room.

By using the mirrors within different color frames you can give several versatile uses throughout. If you are planning to decorate your home with mirrors, here are some simple tips for you.

Make use of mirrors in tight spaces: you can use mirrors in small areas or rooms to make them apparently large. Simply place the mirror on the opposite side of window wall to multiply the view ten times throughout the space. Also the outer natural light will be reflected throughout and so the small space will no longer be dark. His is a classic interior decoration trick to increase the area as well as light in small spaces. Moreover, this is an inexpensive way to create an illusion of space in tight areas.

Decorate the fireplace with a mirror: in many homes the fireplace is the focal point of the room where it is installed. You can further accentuate the fireplace by placing a large mirror within a beautiful frame just above the mantel. This way you can firstly enlarge the appearance of the room and secondly this will give an elegant view by reflecting the accessories and other items including candlesticks and seasonal décor placed on the mantel.

Make the long hallway interesting: place mirror vignettes, ‘puzzle’ piece mirrors, or groups of hanging mirrors on the side walls if you happen to have a long hallway. Mirrors will not only enhance the décor of a long passage but will also brighten it up. Your guests will definitely admire the décor of your long corridor while keenly looking at the mirrors on the walls.

Make your entryway wide and bright: when you place mirrors on the entryway, it does not only open up the space but also enlighten the area. Placing mirrors in a foyer will also be welcomed by your visitors as they will get a place to look at themselves before they enter your home.

Whenever you plan to remodel any part of your home, it adds value to your property and increases the overall worth. Remodeling also lets you make use of the space in the house that often remains unoccupied. Basement of your house is one of such areas. You can increase the living space of your home by redesigning your basement without any kind of big expense of a major construction project. As you would not have to construct new walls and floor, the cost of remodeling a basement can fit into any budget. Here we have various cost effective tips for remodeling your basement.

Floors and Ceilings

While remodeling a basement, exposed pipes and the vent and pipe system along the ceiling is a major problem. To avoid this the only inexpensive and the easiest solution is to paint the pipes and the duct-work. Instead of a drywall ceiling, consider a drop ceiling with foam panels and fluorescent lights that are pretty less costly. When it comes to floors of the basement, you can opt for press-on vinyl tiles, which are among the least expensive options. You can also add an area rug to the floor to make the basement as comfortable and cozy as other rooms of the house.

Walls

When you are going for remodeling your basement, the walls are the next thing to think about. Although hanging drywall is a pretty nice option, but it is fairly expensive and also require professionals to install them. You can however consider painting cinder block walls and the best thing you can do it yourself. This will provide a finished look to your basement. If you want the basement to serve as a kid’s playroom you can also paint some picture on walls or go with child inspired wall decals.

Room Types

Although the basement can be used as an entertainment space, a living room or a guest bedroom, but all these rooms require new and expensive furniture, finished walls and ceilings, and a heating system to make the rooms comfortable. Therefore, instead of using the basement for all such costly room types, you can use it for simple purposes like a playroom, workshop or storage area.

Storage

If storage is your primary motive of basement remodeling, then you can install wall shelving units, freestanding shelving units, cabinets and storage boxes in the basement. This will help to store all your things like documents, seasonal clothes, old toys, sports equipments and all in an organized way.

Focusing on the power of green algae Hungarian designer Bodonyi Gyula has come up with a sustainable light called the “AlgaeBulb” that brings green, user-friendly power to common users. Featuring a LED lamp on top, which is powered a little air pump, the AlgaeBulb makes use of a hidrophobic material to keep the fluidic content in the tank and flow the air freely.

Resembling a drop of water, the eco friendly bulb comprises an air pump and LED, together with hidrophob container, PC Shell and air outlet. The AlgaeBulb ingests carbon dioxide and water through the air pump, located close to the E27 screw, to cultivate green algae with the air moving through the bulb. The green algae discharge oxygen to power the tiny LED within the bulb. When not illuminated, the AlgaeBulb appears dark green, thanks to the live microalgae. Providing a green source of energy, the AlgaeBulb if produced on a large scale can help in saving a huge amount of energy.
